11 Founded in 2007, Université Paris-Est (UPE) is a community of universities and institutions (COMUE) which comprises two universities, a veterinary school, four engineering schools, three schools of architecture, three research institutes, six operating agencies and technical centres, and two hospitals. UPE forges close links between research, training and expertise, creating an interesting continuum, which is enhanced by the multidisciplinary nature of its teaching. Université Paris-Est’s areas of expertise include: l welcoming and training PhD students, l issuing doctorates and accreditation to supervise research (HDR : Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) qualification, l promoting research, l the signature policy for academic publications, l mobility and international openness through the award of joint supervision bursaries and mobility grants and a policy of inviting foreign researchers and research lecturers, l organising two themed hubs, Health and Society — Cities, Environment and related Engineering processes, l Cooperating in academic and educational projects.
