Microfluidics represent the science and technology that process or manipulate small amount of fluids (10-9 to 10-18 litres) with dimensions of tens to hundreds of micrometers in microfluidic chip. Micro-opto-fluidic-systems (MOFS) or Optofluidics aim at manipulating light and fluid at microscale and exploiting their interaction to create highly versatile devices that is significant scientific and interests in many areas. The novelties of the integrated MOFS are twofold. First, fluids can be used to carry substances to be analyzed in highly sensitive optical microdevices. Second, fluids can also be exploited to control optical microdevices, making them tunable, reconfigurable and adaptive. It is a new breakthrough and multidisciplinary research area between liquids and light that can provide new solutions and opportunities for a wide range of traditional photonic devices allowing tuning and reconfiguration at the micrometer scale microfluidic manipulation.
Course Description
This course introduces basic concepts of optofluidics or micro-opto-fluidic systems. It aims to provide basic concepts, theory and fabrication processes, which includes design, analyses, manufacturing, and packaging processes of optofluidic chip. The course begins with a review of fundamental optofluidics and applications. The other advanced topics to be covered such as liquid-liquid waveguide, liquid lens, liquid bubbles grating and microfluidic waveguide laser etc... In this course, the state-of-arts of optofluidic research will be reviewed with the high potential applications of MPFS in biophysical, biochemistry and biomedical study are also discussed following some showcase such as cell's refractive index and cell's Bulk modulus measurement etc. Upon completing this course you should be able to understand basis functions, issues, needs, trends, and roadmaps of optofluidics and have developed critical thinking skills in design, fabrication, and packaging issues of optofluidic chip. This new innovation allows Master and PhD students, scientists and researchers to tackle many classical problems with new tools and new research ideas.
Who should Attend
This course is designed for Master and PhD students and engineers and academics ets. in research fields of micro/nanotechnology, photonics, microfluidics, analytical chemistry and MEMS etc., and other industries who are interested in exploring new research and innovation opportunities in optofluidic chip and MOFS technology. Individuals who want to understand optofluidic and MOFS technology will benefit from this short course. A basic understanding of physical science is recommended.
