FUTURE - Inventing the city of tomorrow

The FUTURE scientific project is built on three challenges: the resource-efficient city; the secure and resilient city; and the smart city. Thanks to its pluridisciplinary nature, this project aims to boost cross-fertilisation of knowledge and expertise between the “hard” sciences, the engineering sciences and the humanities and social sciences. To achieve this, it will rely on 4 levers: • a very high level of interdisciplinarity • a multi-scale approach — ranging from laboratory to territory experiments • a unique facilities and platforms infrastructure, • co-innovation with socio-economic stakeholders. The project’s partners have a four-fold ambition: To be one of the 10 internationally recognised sites for its expertise on the city of tomorrow , by forging a systemic, “people- centric” urban vision and by effective integration into European and international urban networks on urban challenges. To invent and train the designer of the city of tomorrow , by combining skills in engineering, architecture and urban planning, and by blending curiosity-driven and application-oriented research , and by excellence in the professional integration of graduates and PhD students. To be the “demo site for the city of tomorrow”, Europe’s only co-production facility, networked with other international cities and universities , by harnessing excellence relations with private and public stakeholders and by positioning the campus as a “University living lab” and showcase of expertise. To build the new national heavyweight sustainable urban development university that France needs... FUTURE, the project of Université Paris-Est focused on the “City of tomorrow” The UN 2016 sustainable urban development agenda (Habitat III) asserts that, by 2030, humanity will have to deal with urgent urbanisation challenges while ensuring the global social, economic, environmental and climate balances. In this challenging context, our goal is to be… A LEADER IN FRANCE AND AT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL ON THE “CITY OF TOMORROW”. Inventing the “City of tomorrow” INVENTING THE CITY OF TOMORROW The resource- efficient city The smart city The secure and resilient city ...out of a national research institute (IFSTTAR), Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, an architecture school (École d’Architecture de la Ville et des Territoires à Marne-la-Vallée), and two engineering schools (ESIEE Paris and École des Ingénieurs de la Ville de Paris). This new institution will be run using an approach not seen before in France based on highly innovative hybrid versions of existing models. It will also have links with ENSG higher geomatics engineering school and École nationale des Ponts et Chaussées engineering school.
